Spelling
We don’t teach the children spellings; we teach them how to spell
At Holywell, spelling is a thread that runs through writing from Nursery to Year 6. Our philosophy is to teach children the strategies for learning and practising how words are spelled, allowing them the opportunity to explore word roots and understand and appreciate the rich provenance of the evolution of our language.
Through promoting accurate spelling across our curriculum, we ensure we meet the national curriculum objectives to:
enhance pupils’ vocabulary
clarify the meaning of unknown words and words with more than one meaning
foster a fascination for etymology and the roots of words embraced on our language from other languages
appreciate and use Standard English as appropriate
