At Holywell Primary our vision is that every child is known, happy and learning. Art helps children explore ideas, record their experiences and express themselves through creative work. They learn to draw, paint, print, work with textiles, build in 3D and create collage.

The curriculum helps them understand how artists communicate ideas and how creative work reflects different cultures and experiences. Through thoughtful teaching they develop skills in observation, vocabulary and reflection which help them talk confidently about their own work and the work of others.

Our curriculum is organised into blocks that focus on specific artistic disciplines. Children revisit drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D work and collage as they move through school so they can build skills gradually and work with increasing confidence. They also learn about artists, craft makers and designers and explore how art has developed across different times and cultures.

Art is fully inclusive and all children take part. Teaching is adapted where needed so every child can access learning in a meaningful way. Lessons are practical and creative. Children experiment with materials, explore techniques and use sketchbooks to develop ideas and reflect on their progress.

Assessment is ongoing. Teachers use discussion and observation to understand how well children develop skills and express ideas. End of unit outcomes help track progress and guide future teaching.
