Mathematics helps children develop confidence, enjoyment and the ability to apply their understanding to everyday life. They learn to think logically, explain their ideas and approach challenges with a positive can do attitude.

The curriculum helps children build fluency, reasoning and problem solving through teaching for mastery. This approach supports a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and is informed by national research including EEF guidance, Ofsted’s maths report and NCETM materials. Through thoughtful teaching children develop number sense, accuracy and flexibility in their thinking.

Our curriculum follows a spiral structure aligned with the National Curriculum. Key concepts are revisited at greater depth as children move through school. Learning is broken into small, connected steps so children can build securely on prior knowledge and make meaningful links across topics. Concrete resources, visual models and varied representations support understanding and help children explore ideas in different ways.

Lessons are active and engaging. Children work independently and collaboratively to discuss strategies, address misconceptions and solve problems. Programmes such as Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars support the development of essential number facts and strengthen fluency. Mathematics is fully inclusive and all children take part. Teaching is adapted where needed so every child can access learning in a meaningful way and make progress from their individual starting points.

Assessment is ongoing. Teachers use questioning, observation and children’s work to understand how well they are developing their mathematical knowledge and skills. This helps identify strengths, address gaps and guide future teaching.

At Holywell we want our children to foster a love of maths, develop a deep understanding of core concepts, feel confident tackling fluency, reasoning and problem solving and achieve well across the curriculum.
