At Holywell Primary our vision is that every child is known, happy and learning. Design and Technology helps children solve problems, explore ideas and create products with a clear purpose. They learn to work with a range of materials and develop skills that support them in school and in everyday life.
Children learn that everyone is welcome and included which supports a strong sense of belonging, respect and equality. The curriculum helps them understand how products are designed and made and how ideas can be improved through reflection and adaptation. Through thoughtful teaching they develop creativity, resilience and practical skills.
Our curriculum begins in the Foundation Stage where children have regular opportunities to explore materials and tools through child initiated play and STEM sessions. From Year 1 to Year 6 the curriculum follows the National Curriculum and builds on prior learning. Children revisit and extend their understanding of mechanisms, structures, materials, textiles and systems. Every year group also learns about food and nutrition as we believe this is an essential life skill.
Design and Technology is fully inclusive and all children take part. Teaching is adapted where needed so every child can access learning in a meaningful way. Lessons are practical and purposeful. Children design, make and evaluate products and learn to use specific vocabulary to talk about their ideas and outcomes.
Assessment is ongoing. Teachers use observation, discussion and finished products to understand how well children are developing their knowledge and skills. This helps identify strengths, address gaps and guide future teaching.
