At Holywell, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that is, not only enjoyable, but allows pupils to experience a wide range of activities that develop health, fitness and wellbeing. We offer high-quality physical education that motivates all pupils to thrive and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities, scaffolded by the Get Set PE scheme. We have a skills-based curriculum that looks at the skills that can used across a range of sports, rather than focussing on the sports first. Our PE curriculum is carefully designed to build skills in small steps in line with ‘The Holywell Way’.
Children are taught each week by either teaching staff or a qualified sports instructor from Nursery to Year 6. Each lesson is skills based, with the children learning how to use the skills and develop their abilities. As the children move up through the school, they will be taught how to use those skills in a variety of sports, and learn the rules and regulations of all positions in those sports. Children also have the opportunity to partake in lunch and afterschool clubs, all run by qualified coaches, which offer the chance to hone skills in a variety of sports including football, basketball, netball, gymnastics. We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to not only participate, but to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.
We have a group of Year 5 and 6 children who have taken on the role of Play Leaders. They offer a range of sporting activities for children to participate in at lunchtime. Our Year 6 children are also given the chance to be a member of the Sports Crew, who help organise sporting events in the school, and learn how to manage the equipment.
At Holywell, progress in PE is seen through the growing confidence, resilience and enjoyment children demonstrate in lessons, clubs and sporting events. Skills are carefully built upon each year, ensuring that pupils can apply them across a range of sports and physical activities, while also developing teamwork, leadership and a lifelong love of movement.
