Launched in 2005, Grow Your Own Potatoes (GYOP) was one of the first primary school
based growing projects. Since then it has become the largest of its kind with over 2 million children taking part in learning where potatoes come from, how they grow and that potatoes are a healthy food. Its simplicity and the fact that GYOP is a hands on activity makes it perfect for young pupils.
This is the 10th year that Holywell have entered this competition and hopes are high that we can be one of the top schools at harvesting time. In 2015 6MH grew 2076g of the Rocket variety of potatoes from just three seeds. Could this be our record year? Keep coming back to this webpage to monitor our potatoes progress.
***Tuesday 20 February 2018 – chitting our potatoes***
Today we placed our seed potatoes in the chitting tray provided. This year we are growing two separate varieties of potatoes. The first type are the rocket variety, this is the variety that gave Holywell its record harvest in 2015. The other type are the regional variety. We placed our seeds on a windowsill with the sprouts facing upwards for two weeks.
***Tuesday 6 March 2018 – planting our potato seeds***
We planted our seed potatoes into the grow bags provided. In each bag (we are growing four bags of each type this year) we planted three seeds of the same variety.
***Tuesday 12 June 2018 – we will harvest our potatoes***
